South African born singer/songwriter, Zarni, has released her debut music video "New Love". The Indiego team had the pleasure of interviewing her and asking her about the video and about where she is at the moment with regards to her music.
We first asked her to provide a quick bio of herself and her career:
Indiego: Who is Zarni?
Zarni: I'm a young Singer/Songwriter, born and raised in South Africa. I moved to the US at age ten with my mother and stepfather where I started to become very involved in music at school and privately. By age 16 I was gigging around town. A few years later I was accepted to attend the highly acclaimed Berklee College of Music in Boston where I completed a double major in Music Education and Songwriting. I was asked to play for John Mayer during one of his visits to the college in my last semester and John Mayer raved about my song "Evaporated" in March of 2011 saying "I just want to hear it again, you've got two great hooks here... I can imagine girls around the world singing this". I now live in Seattle as a fulltime musician and teaching music in my time off.
Before we go on further with the questions, please take a look and listen to the video:
Indiego: Is this your first official video release? If not, how many videos have you released so far?
Zarni: Yes, first Official Release!
Indiego: Did you write the song?
Indiego: Where was the song recorded? (studio?) Who produced the song?
Zarni: The Studio is located in Vancouver, Canada: "Monarch Studios". It was produced by Tyler Johnson who works closely with Nettwerk Records.
Indiego: Who directed and produced the video?
Zarni: Ben Meyers directed and produced it- his company is called 21SummitProductions
Indiego: Tell us a bit about the video. What does the title mean? What is the story behind the video?
Zarni: The title is "New Love" but if you listen to the lyrics and you watch the video, you will see that it is actually about old love that still feels like new love and how special that can be. Most of the couples you will see in the video are real couples and have been together for years, so it was great working with them and seeing how they interact with each other.
Indiego: Where you involved in the creative aspects of the video?
Zarni: Yes. I knew I wanted to involve other people and not have it centered around me and a male character. I just felt it would be too exclusive that way.
Indiego: The location of the shoot is really very beautiful. Where was it shot?
Zarni: Thanks, I agree! It is in my favorite city, Boston. I went to varsity there so it has a bit of a soft spot in my heart. Very specifically, the park is close to Fenway Park and it's known by the locals as "The Fens".
Indiego: Are you also singing the harmonies in the song?
Indiego: Is this song part of an album? If yes, when can we expect the album release?
Zarni: Yes, the song is part of a 6 song EP. The EP is titled "Honest Company" and it will be released in October 2014!
Indiego: What's been the initial reaction from your fans and others regarding the video?
Zarni: Fans seemed to really enjoy it- we had over 1000 views in just 3 days, so people were clearly eager to spread it and share it with their friends. That is exactly what I wanted
Indiego: What are your immediate plans for the next few months, especially after this video release?
Zarni: I plan on touring around the States more, as well as South Africa in January of 2015, when I visit again. I need to get the songs in people's hands and ears and the live show seems to be the best way to do that.
Indiego: If fans want to see you perform this song live, where can they catch you in the next few weeks?
Zarni: I'll be at Marks Park Sports Club Wednesday 9/24 as part of Andy's Acoustic Forum. The featured act is Tony Cox, so I am excited to hear him. Show starts at 8pm
Indiego: What would you like to say to all your fans (and potential new fans) out there?
Zarni: Just a big thank you to those of you that already support me - it really gives everything meaning and momentum and I simply can't do it without you. To the new potential fans- hope you find something to hold on to in the music.
