The Indiego team had the pleasure of interviewing Selkie, an SA Idols 2010 finalist, who is now an accomplished perfomer, currently performing on a cruise liner operating out of the USA. Read what she had to say about her music and her travels.
Indiego: Can you remember at what age you started playing music/singing? What made you get into it?
Selkie: Yes I was 9/10 when I sang on stage for the first time. I was involved in acting which led me to my passion for expressing myself through song.
Indiego: What was the first song that you learned to sing?
Selkie: Too long ago to remember
Indiego: Do you play any instruments?
Yes Guitar and a bit of Keys. Love my guitar.
Indiego: Are you a self-taught musician, or did you study music formally?
I studied Drama and Classical Music formerly as Matric subjects at school and went on to study Drama Performance, Jazz and Popular Voice at University for 2 years.
I taught myself how to play guitar from the knowledge I gained from studying theory.
Indiego: Which famous musician/singer do you admire the most? Why?
Jeff Buckley. He used to borrow a telecaster to use at gigs. He's the real deal.
Indiego: What is your favourite album or cd of all time?
I can't pick a fave. There are so many artists I love depending on my mood. I'd need to make a compilation of fave songs.
Indiego: What genre would you say your music falls into?
Indiego: Do you write your own lyrics and compose your own music? If you write your own lyrics, what inspires your lyrics?
Yes. My songs are inspired by personal experiences and feelings. Conversations I have with people, places I see, my faith, my love, my freedom... the ways I perceive the world...
Indiego: Have you officially released any songs/albums? Any plans for the future?
Yes. I have an EP available on Bandcamp entitled TEARS but my brand new Full length debut Album entitled SALT will soon be available on iTunes.
I'm currently in the states & plan on seeing Europe soon. (watch and listen to "Your eyes", an orignal song by Selkie, at the bottom of the article)
Indiego: Can you tell us where you are performing at the moment (May 2014)? (give a brief summary of your current gig on the cruise liner; what the job entails, etc.).
I am currently a SOLO Performer on Carnival Cruiselines 'The Breeze.' which is the company's Flag Ship & newest and largest in the fleet.
I am with several non-exclusive agencies who offer me contracts to perform within 4-8 month contracts at a time. I am working on a new project for 2015.
Indiego: What are some of the most interesting places/venues that you have performed at?
Singing on SA's TV Show IDOLS in 2010 was quite a crazy experience because of the Camera element. I've performed in all sorts of unusual countries.
Aqaba Jordan was my favourite place for its Dead and Red Seas and Dive Culture.
Indiego: When performing live, do you play mainly covers or do you play originals?
I play 2/3 covers and 1/3 originals but I make everything my own. I point a SELKIE twist on everything and often get complimented on my originality and ability to cross so many genres whilst still being me.
Indiego: Are you a full time or part time musician/artist?
I am so grateful to be a full time musician.
Indiego: Are you busy with any recording projects at the moment? (or planning to record in the near future?)
I am working on a collaboration with a talented Violinist/Flutist.
Indiego: Where are you based? (in terms of living permanently)
Currently Miami. But Durban/JHB from November 2014-January 2015.
Indiego: Are you planning on moving elsewhere to pursue your career?
I will be wherever the wind takes me. I am interested in seeing as much of the world while I can.
Indiego: If you had to choose one venue/concert in the world that you could perform in, which would it be?
'Other Voices' in Ireland.
Indiego: And last, but not least: what do you want to say to your fans or potential fans out there?
Keep listening & thank you! I so appreciate you taking the time to hear me and believe in me. Don't forget to connect with me on Facebook.com/selkieofficial
